Willamette STAGE Company’s 2009-2010 STAGE One Season
We’re busily planning our third season and we’ve got some very exciting prospects in store. We’ll share the full slate as soon as we know. Expect an announcement soon. But, here’s a taste of what’s to come…
We’re delighted to announce the first show of our 2009-2010 STAGE One season:
Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning A Delicate Balance will be presented October 9-24, directed by STAGE Associate Artistic Director Brian Newberg.
And we’re even more delighted to present the cast we’ve assembled to bring you this American stage classic:
Margaret Mann as Agnes — Margaret returns from Connecticut for her second wSc role, following her appearance last winter as Alice in The Retreat from Moscow.
Cynthia Abrams as Claire — A veteran stage, film, and television actor in California, Cynthia makes her home in Santa Rosa. Balance is Cynthia’s first STAGE appearance.
Harriet Nixon as Julia — Harriet previously appeared for wSc as Mary in last season’s The Memory of Water.
Robert Hirsh as Tobias — Robert is wSc Artistic Director.
Calvin Ward as Harry — STAGE audiences have seen Calvin as the hundred-year-old man in Skyscraper (2008) and as Philippe in last spring’s Heroes.
Jean Bonifas as Edna — Jean makes her STAGE debut in Balance; Jean has numerous local acting credits, with both Albany Civic Theatre and Corvallis Community Theatre, and was a founding member of Springboard Improv Troupe.
A Delicate Balance won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best New Play in 1967. In 1996, a Broadway revival won both the Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Revival. Edward Albee’s plays have earned three Pulitzers and critical awards too numerous to list.
Here’s a sampling of critical responses to A Delicate Balance:
“Albee…has forced us to stare at the truth again. We should be grateful…The essence of good theater is truth, and Albee’s truth is a hard one, told well. Go, and take a very smart friend. (I did.) There will be much to talk about on the ride home, and for many days thereafter.” –Tim Treanor, DCTheatreScene.com
“…an evening of combustibly entertaining drama, of a variety that reminds you how enriching a play can be with a subtle and sophisticated grip on the human psyche. This is grown-up theater — the bristling sort that gives a playgoer hope…” –Peter Marks, Washington Post
Season tickets will be available soon.
And mark your calendar for STAGE-Fest 2009, September 13.
