Blackbird
Winner of the 2007 Laurence Olivier Prize for Best New Play
by David Harrower
Northwest Premiere!
Our audience applauds:
Blackbird is “Magnificent.” “Wonderful.” “A completely absorbing experience.” “Complex and brilliant.”
Jake TenPas’ cover story in the Gazette-Times’ Entertainer said: “Blackbird [is] a riveting look at power dynamics and personal redemption…powerful and thought-provoking.” (To read the article, click here.
Fifteen years ago, Una and Ray had a relationship. They haven’t set eyes on each other since. Now she’s found him again…
Since its sensational debut in August 2005 at Scotland’s Edinburgh International Festival, Blackbird has been stunning audiences in cities around the world: London, Prague, Warsaw, Berlin, Vienna, Helsinki, Zurich, Sidney (produced and directed by Cate Blanchett), New York, and San Francisco among others. Reviewing the original production, The Scotsman said: “Ferocious in its attention to the value of every word — and profoundly musical in its piecing together of text, movement and sound — [Blackbird] builds towards a conclusion that is almost breathtaking in its visual and physical eloquence.”
You won’t want to miss the Northwest Premier of this provocative new work by David Harrower.
Following its triumph in Scotland, Blackbird took London audiences by storm, and won the 2007 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play. The reviewer for London’s Daily Telegraph said, “I have rarely seen an audience watch a new work with such rapt attention… Blackbird is a drama that mixes guilt, memory, and desire into the most potent of theatrical cocktails.” And the Sunday Herald said, “Harrower’s drama positively explodes…dry, resonating poetry…one of the most daring new plays of recent years.”
Our Blackbird features two cast members familiar to our audiences: Billi Veber (Skyscraper and Rabbit Hole) as Una, and STAGE Artistic Director Robert Hirsh as Ray; and we’re introducing a wSc newcomer, Bridget O’Malley, as the Girl. LBCC’s Brian Newberg directs, with a set by STAGE Scene Designer Ross Jackson, and lighting design by John Elliott.
Note: This play contains very mature themes and some strong language; not appropriate for young children; parental discretion advised.
Blackbird will be performed July 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 and 26 at 8:00 pm and July 20 at 4:00 pm in the intimate Black Box theatre at Corvallis High School, 1400 NW Buchanan Avenue. Click here for a map.
